Branching out into Print Media of the Digital Kind....Ebooks
Posted on December 10, 2011 by Harvey Poling Jr
After purchasing a Vizio Vtab1008 tablet, I started viewing some of the
books being offered by the Kindle store. It began to stir my interest
in creating an Ebook of my own. I found that aside from the work of
actually writing something, formatting the book properly and creating
the title cover was not easy either. To format an Ebook, you are
actually creating a very simple HTML page, the kind that was popular
about 10 years ago. It has to be very simple, but simplicity isn't
that easy. For one thing, any word processing program seems to like to
add various elements that aren't compatible to a kindle viewer. That
means that you have to know what you're doing to delete these
non-essential bits of code. I am not an HTML expert by any means. I
can somewhat tell how each piece of code is manipulating the document,
but to quickly write the code is very difficult. Fortunately I found a
pretty easy template and built the book. It took me several revisions
to get all the fonts to be the same size and the table of contents to
work properly.
Making the cover was easier for me, although I was intimidated after
reading that most authors choose to have a professional do it. They
cite the differences between a regular print book's cover size and the
tiny thumbnail icon that Ebooks have. I did not relish the idea of
paying someone to create a cover image, when I had no idea if the book
would sell. I decided to take the graphic plunge and do it myself.
After all, getting experience in creating compelling graphics was part
of the learning too.
I have Photoshop and am slowly learning how to use its immense amount
of functions. I still did not feel comfortable enough with it to make
a book title image. What to do? Then I realized that Sony Vegas had
all the necessary ingredients to fashion a cover didn't it? It has
fonts, shadowing, video effects and layers in the form of tracks. It
is possible to set the properties to the 600 x 800 pixel size that
Kindle requires and create a snapshot from the tracks. So I decided
to be independent all the way and design the cover myself. Since I was
most familiar with Vegas, the process went much smoother. I am sure
that Photoshop would be the premier application to do this sort of
thing, but Vegas seemed to work well.
After much work and many revisions and a little help from my cousin,
Steve Poling that also has an Ebook for sale, my first book, "Digging
Up New Uses for Your GPS" is for sale Here:

Digging Up New Uses for Your GPS-
The second book, just out deals with the many strange postal
experiences I've had over the last 30 years. It has color
illustrations done with Crazy Talk Animator and the cover was also
created using Vegas Pro. I think you will find it humorous, written in
a tongue in cheek manner and contains some touching moments as well.
You can view it here:

Available at Amazon Kindle Books-
It's a little unnerving to put a piece of you out into the public for
scrutiny, but it's exciting too. Who knows if it will sell, but the
process has been interesting and rewarding. Now I have a little
experience to know what to expect when I write my next tome. Well,
perhaps tome is a bit ambitious, since it denotes a large book. Maybe
a mini-tome.

Underwater Videos using a PoleCam?
Posted on October 13, 2011 by Harvey Poling Jr
Recently I wrote about making an inexpensive Polecam to capture video
or pictures from a high vantage point to spice up your next video. Did
you know you can use the same technique to capture underwater scenes as
well?
Not long ago, I visited a salmon weir where these fish were harvested
for eggs. I brought along my Polecam, receiving some quizzical looks
from bystanders, wondering perhaps if my rig was some sort of strange
new net to steal a fish dinner. I placed my waterproof Kodak Playsport
Zx3 video camera on the tripod mount and was able to stand on shore and
capture, visually that is, several fish in their natural setting. The
Playsport does a good job capturing video up to 10 feet of water.
So using a long pole not only can give you an height advantage, it can
also help you capture some very low, underwater shots as well without
much of an investment. It could also come in handy in viewing the
bottom of the boat for damage, viewing a strange blip on the fish
finder and locating a favorite reel that got tossed overboard.
Here's a video showing the fish in the weir and also underwater as
well:

How to Sync Tracks in Sony Vegas & Movie Studio
Posted on August 21, 2011 by Harvey Poling Jr
Did you know you can video record an event with two or more cameras and
use multiple camera angles in your video production? By laying out each
cameras track on the timeline, you can switch to the various shots
whenever you chose. To do that, the tracks must be in sync, that is the
video and audio must match each other in order to make a coherant
presentation. In this Youtube video, we will learn how to sync tracks
together and keep them together.

Enter your search keyword(s) and the keyword "zorgium" into the search input field of

Heads up: There's an ongoing spamdexing of Google searchbot algorithms. Sites that are 'copies of copies' and cloaked sites which include Zorgium keywords presented to search engine crawlers yet garbage content presented to human visitors were hosted on thousands of IP addresses and domains registered immediately after the introduction of Zorgium in November of 2009. The Hostgator/'The Planet'/Softlayer datacenters in Texas seem to be the epicenter of this activity in conjunction with anonymously registered domains of various TLD's but primarily .info domains at Godaddy which, in our opinion, has some sort of connection to the domains of goldmint.in and goldmint.org. Google has begun to notice this and has begun to lower the ranking of these sites and put our original sites back on top of the search rankings. These actions, as far as we can tell, negatively impact the use of the keyword 'zorgium' as a search term and provided little benefit, if any, to the perpetrators.
ZORGIUM note to content providers: If you don't want your page to appear in Zorgium's search abstraction then put an exclusion for "Zorgium" in your web server's robots.txt file.
